"You can't always get a disease when you need it,
so call Custom Medical."

Our tag line brings a laugh to most but it has a very serious side meaning. Your client may need an image of a person with a skin condition, trauma or possibly an impalement. Getting a model to expose themselves to a disease or trauma will create incredibly high modeling fees if the model stays on set for the photo shoot.

Custom Medical has images to satisfy your most critical requirements for clinical images. So call Custom Medical for that elusive disease or trauma image.

Your B2B clients who are physicians, nurses and other healthcare personnel enjoy and relate to medical images.

Over the last 30 years, researchers have made some impressive strides in battling certain types of cancer. It's estimated, for example, that 99% of prostate cancer patients will survive at least five years and 9 out of 10 breast cancer patients will too.* While the numbers may not be quite as big when it comes to pancreatic cancer, the numbers are significant.

Having bought and rebuilt dozens of vintage juke boxes, Dr. Steve Qualman has an appreciation for just how much technology has changed when it comes to music. The same goes for his health. Diagnosed with pancreas cancer last summer, Steve knew what he was up against. Survival rates have barely changed in decades, but in his case...

"Right now they can't find my primary tumor on a CT scan, nor the original metastatic disease. I do have other areas that look like there's residual, but it's a very small amount of residual disease right now," says Qualman.

What's making the difference for these patients is a new approach that personalizes cancer treatments. Doctor Tanios Saab with Ohio State University's James Cancer Hospital says survival rates are still low, around 5%, but that number is nearly triple what it was a generation ago.

"For some of these patients, we actually see significant improvements in survival and, more importantly, in the quality of life," says Saab.

Dr. Saab says technology has lead to a better understanding of pancreas tumors and a better class of drugs to attack them. But the newest drugs don't attack the tumors themselves, instead they settle into the tissue around the tumor and starve it.

"The tumor needs blood and blood supply to grow. If you cut that off, then the tumor will be unlikely to grow and that's in the later stages," says Saab. These advances aren't lost on Steve. He was a doctor who worked around cancer most of his career. Knowing the small but sure steps that researchers are taking against this disease is music to his ears.

More than 100 times a day, someone is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the U.S.** Doctors say it can be hard to treat because there are few symptoms that allow them to catch it early. If you have dramatic and sudden weight loss or if your skin begins to appear yellow, those could be signs of trouble and you should see your doctor.
Controlling direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs has an important role to play in making prescription drugs more affordable for the overall U.S. health care system.

A recent AARP study revealed that, on average, pharmaceutical manufacturer prices for the 220 brand name drugs most widely used by older Americans rose at more than two and one-half times the rate of general inflation in 2007.

Increased spending on prescription drugs is due, in part, to the increase in direct to consumer advertising. In recent years, according to IMS Health, the amount of money spent on direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs has increased rapidly: $4.8 billion was spent in 2006, an over 400% increase from the $1.1 billion spent in 1997, when the FDA first relaxed its guidelines for broadcast advertising.

Overall health care costs increase when patients are prescribed - often unnecessarily - new, heavily-advertised pharmaceuticals as the first-line therapy, rather than older, equally effective but often less-expensive medications.

Many advertisements do not make the drug's safety, use, and efficacy clear. Older consumers are concerned about the value of prescription drugs and would appreciate information regarding the effectiveness of the medication. The most effective ads are those that teach and educate older consumers about a specific condition and that urge a dialogue with their physician.

Direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs can be helpful to consumers to the extent ads provide general information about a specific disease or condition, particularly one that is historically under-diagnosed and/or undertreated (e.g., "help-seeking" advertisements).

The purpose of a ligament is to hold two bones together. The ACL is a ligament in the center of your knee that prevents the shin bone (tibia) from moving forward on the thigh bone (femur). A tear of this ligament can cause your knee to give way during physical activity. Research suggests that if a torn ACL is left untreated, and the knee repeatedly gives way, cartilage damage and early arthritis may occur.

ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace the torn ligament. There are several choices of tissue to use for the new ligament, including tissue from your own body (an autograft) or tissue from someone who has died (allograft). The most common autografts use part of the tendon in the front of the knee (patellar tendon) or in the hamstring. Each type of graft has small advantages and disadvantages, and works well for many people.

The procedure is usually done by knee arthroscopy . With arthroscopy, a camera is inserted into the knee through a small poke-hole. The camera is connected to a video monitor. The surgeon checks the cartilage and ligaments of the knee. If there is other damage, such as a meniscus tear , the surgeon will fix the problem. You will most likely go to sleep for the procedure, but it can be performed under different types of anesthesia.

Then, the surgeon will replace the ACL. Other small incisions are made around the knee to place the new ligament. The old ligament will be removed using a shaver or other instruments. Bone tunnels will be made to place the new ligament in the knee at the site of the old ACL. If your own tissue is to be used for the new ligament, a larger, "open" incision will be made to take the tissue. The new ligament is then fixed to the bone using screws or other devices to hold the ligament in place.

At the end of the surgery, the incisions are closed, and a dressing is applied. During the arthroscopy, most surgeons take pictures of the procedure from the video monitor to show you what was found and what was done.
