Illustration XX. Sex chromosomes comprise the 23rd chromosome pair in a Human karyotype. The sex chromosomes determine the gender. Humans have two sex chromosomes, X and Y. Females have two X chromosomes in their diploid cells, while males have both X and a Y chromosomes in their cells. Egg cells (female) all contain an X chromosome, while sperm cells (male) contain an X or Y chromosome. Thus it is the male that determines the sex of the offspring when fertilization occurs."
